CELSI Frontiers Seminar: DEEPLAB project introduction

Dec. 6, 2024

At the December's CELSI Frontiers Seminar, CELSI's new DEEPLAB project was introduced.

On Friday, December 6, CELSI senior researcher Monika Martišková and our newest colleague Jakub Barszcz presented their research project titled "DEEPLAB: Implications of deep decarbonisation of high emission industries on labour market and employees in Slovakia."

They explained that the DEEPLAB project responds first and foremost to the topic of economic and labour market consequences of climate change, especially in terms of mapping consequences to the Slovak industry, especially in hard-to-abate industries and its supply chains.

The intended study combines quantitative modelling of input-output analysis with qualitative stakeholders engagement.

The  project aims to widen the knowledge distinguishing the future demand for different qualification levels of employees in hard-to-abate and emerging sectors tackled by decarbonisation, thus offering detail view on the future labour market developments in the Slovak industry under different pathways of deep decarbonisation.

The project emphasizes the critical need for stakeholder cooperation in developing a strategy to mitigate the impacts of labor market changes in alignment with just transition principles. To achieve this, researchers implement an environmentally extended IO IMPACTECH model and combine it with stakeholder consultations.

During the event, we discussed the proposed methodology and outputs and their relevance for academic and public debate in Slovakia.

CELSI's scientific director Martin Kahanec expressed most thanks to the whole Team for a great event, many thanks to Monika and Jakub, to who he wished all the best with the project. He aslo expressed thanks to Nina, Kristina, Jakub for sharing their experiences with Martin's students.

The project was supported by the Slovak National Resilience and Recovery Fund.
